We’ll be archaeologists and alchemists in this three-day workshop, digging deep to find treasures and turning lead into gold. We’ll work on some pieces from the beginning, and we’ll dig into works you have in progress, revamp your old acrylic or oil pieces, discovering and creating new treasures as we go.
In this workshop we’ll be using several methods of incising, pulling back, abrading, and scraping back of layers to reveal sections of previous layers. We’ll experiment with mark-making, using solvents, adding metal leaf, texturing, and using additives. You’ll come away with richly stratified pieces, full of mystery and wonder.

Creating abstract art with oil paint and cold wax medium is intuitive, bold, and full of discovery. Your pieces will take on lives of their own through the many layers of oil and cold wax you apply, addition of mixed media elements, and the areas you choose to scrape away.
I’ll show you lots of techniques for adding layers, textures, graphic touches and atmosphere to your work. We’ll do a lot of playful, gestural mark-making to activate the painting and get inspired.
I encourage you to mix and match techniques in your own way and to develop your own style.
The watchword for this workshop is, “Experiment!” You’ll build up many layers, incise, scribble, scrape back, and texture your work, allowing each piece to tell its own story.
